Community School

What is a community school?

Using schools as hubs, community schools bring educators, families, and community partners together to offer a range of opportunities, supports, and services to children, youth as well as their families and communities. Community schools provide expanded learning opportunities that are motivating and engaging during the school day, after school, and in the summer. They offer essential health and social supports and services and Engage families and communities as assets in the lives of their children and youth.

Harlem
Childrens Zone

HCZ® has achieved unprecedented success, helping thousands of children and families and disrupting the cycle of generational poverty in Central Harlem through our innovative and effective programs. In order to achieve long-term success, children need consistent, comprehensive support. Our pipeline begins at birth and helps kids every step of the way until college graduation through exceptional education, social services, family support, health, and community-building programs. By continuously assessing the progress of our youth, we can leverage the power of our pipeline to fine-tune our programs and ensure that we are fully addressing the needs of every child, at every age.

Leader In Me

Leader in Me (LiM) is an evidence-based, comprehensive-school improvement model—developed in partnership with educators—that empowers students with the leadership and life skills they need to thrive in the 21st century.
Instead of focusing on academic measures alone, Leader in Me embodies a holistic approach to education, redefining how schools measure success. This approach empowers educators with effective practices and tools to teach to every student, create a culture of student empowerment, and align systems to drive results in academics.

Harlem Lacrosse

Harlem Lacrosse provides school-based, full-day, year-round support for our students by placing a full-time staff member at our school sites for each of our programs. Harlem Lacrosse Program Directors maintain a constant presence in the lives of the students we serve. They are tutors, mentors, and coaches who provide individualized attention that meets students where they are and helps them reach their full potential. Our programming empowers students to set high expectations for themselves, achieve their goals and break the cycle of poverty by providing daily study halls, mentoring, push-in academic support, experiential and service-learning and vigorous, character building lacrosse instruction.

The NY Foundling

The New York Foundling is built on a 150-year-old promise to our neighbors, that all children, adults, and families can have the opportunity to reach their full potential. For all of us, unlocking our potential requires support along the way. The New York Foundling provides carefully designed programs, effective and interrelated services, and opportunities for children, families, and adults to create transformational change in their own lives. We believe every one of the 30,000 people we serve each year is capable of making the right choice for their future and that circumstance or zip code should not limit someone’s potential.

Equipping The Next Generation of Creators & Makers

CODE FOR LIFE is an exciting new collaborative initiative that unites Nyack College, Praxis Connections, the tech community, and local church partners. CODE FOR LIFE combines the proximity of (and therefore ease of access to) neighborhood churches, the resources of Nyack College’s math and science departments, and the expertise of technology professionals to bring practical tools for professional and economic success to kids living in high poverty neighborhoods. CODE FOR LIFE employs a theory and methodology of change that will transform the way young people view themselves and their future through vision casting, life and technology coaching, case management, positive peer group experiences, and skill building—especially as it relates to coding.By participating in CODE FOR LIFE, young people in high-poverty neighborhoods can develop practical life skills and the technological proficiency they’ll need to thrive for the rest of their lives. Our mission at CODE FOR LIFE is to create an on ramp to the new technology economy for the young people living in high-poverty neighborhoods by means of a church-based technology program.
